Statement
Place is in a state of flux. My world, life and being are in a constant state of changing. Today one will lose and another will win. Tomorrow it will be different, with a different set of circumstances. This is how my world is. Through these postcards it is my goal to represent how quickly I must change and adapt to my current place, and fulfill the role that I am most needed in at that given moment. This transition is often ragged, clunky and out of sync with my being, wife, school and work. These postcards are a means to offer an intermediate glimpse into the fluctuations I respond to daily.
Fantasy:
My reality shifts constantly as I am changing from one mode to another. This mundane scene from the sink seeks to represent how each part of my life begs to be different and assert some dominance into my arena of thought. While they strive to seek their dominion none are fully assertive but all are equal in their lack. The use of kitchen utensils speaks to how I must use each of these objects as a vessel or tool in order to compose myself, and manage my life as a whole.
Repetition:
Most men have a chair, this one is mine. My world centers around this old piece of furniture, and it is the hub of my home and life. My chair represents my center, and a place of calm and unobtrusiveness. In generating repetitions I wanted to have the chair remain static, whilst the world moved, changed, and affected the chair. These changes imitate my life by showing the degree to which I must transition from husband to father, from student to worker, from son to father and so on.
Concealment/Reveal
The image of my design board reveals much about me as a person, in that most people do not know that I am an avid quilter, and fabric designer. Yet this design wall, through its existence, represents how change affects me and my family, and how I so often cling to one point of stability only to shift that point moments later. My situation is precarious, and often I fail and fall. One part of my world will be darkened, whilst another is lit up, and in either case I lose.

Hi, Mark. How are you? So hey, money knife. Awesome. Pretty nice exploration of the technical tools but I think it suffers in quality a little. I fits the theme very well but again you have to make it visually appealing as well as technically and conceptually appealing.
ReplyDeleteSecond one! This is fantastic! Fan-Tast-Tic! This could be used in a damn ad, man. Very nice.
Third one gave me motion sickness, but that's a good thing really because of the concept and the visual. Very nice.
Your big ideas, about transitions and pressures, are conveyed in an interesting way in these images. I think its interesting that you chose to represent the aspects of your life with different dishes in your sink. Your images are all very personal, and with your explanations they become very interesting and relatable. Visually and conceptually, your third postcard is the most interesting. I think the idea of documenting the progression of that chairs history is really interesting.
ReplyDeleteYour technological proficiency is really nice! Everything is very nicely done, nothing sticks out as a stark cut and paste image.
ReplyDeleteI think that you should rearrange the images so that it reflects your statements. (flip the chair image and the text image so that the text image goes last)
Visually, I think that each image has its own way of being interesting. Conceptually, however, your Big Idea got a little vague sometimes. After reading your statement it all made more sense, but it would be nice if maybe your images portrayed your Big Idea a little better on their own. But take that with a grain of salt, because maybe it's just me that thinks that. : P
Happy Friday!!
Big Idea: Identity. Aspects of identity and the transitions between/among them.
ReplyDeleteI am most drawn to your postcard with the chair. I can grasp the big idea with the image alone and no discussion or explanation. The fact that you chose to use repetition in a way completely different from the rest of us is fantastic. I also like your second postcard. I was glad that your text wasn't directly stating or obviously relating to your big idea. It seems as though you are one of the few to do something like this, and yet you were able to get the big idea across as well.
I would say your first postcard is the least successful. I understand your intent, but the differences between the objects are distracting and really flatten the image. I am not sure how to address this, but I think it could use some work.
I enjoy your second and third postcards. Both fantastic. This first postcard I understand better now that you gave us background on it. I like this idea of your reality, and the shift and change in reality. I think you put a nice perspective on your overall concept. Each individual picture represents change in a different way, and I appreciate how personal these images are. I also like how they have similar color schemes.
ReplyDeleteFirst postcard is very conceptual and everything has a significant meaning, but if you don’t know each meaning leaves you wondering, I like that, but I think it could have been handled a little technically better.
ReplyDeleteI like the quiliting one and how its process realates so well to constant change and stability. I also like the text.
My favorite of the three is definatley the third one, I love the look of it and the motion it implys .I almost wish tt was pushed a tiny bit further.
big idea= change
ReplyDeletei thought the third postcard does a really nice job of portraying change in your life. visually i love it as well as the idea in the first postcard.
one critique i have is the technical aspect of the first postcard... but in a way the craft could be taken into consideration with your idea of chaos.
Wow! After listening to your explanations of each postcard, I love the creative ways in which you represent your life. They are so deep, relatable, and very well though through. I especially like the third postcard because it created a sense of movement. The movement made it much easier to experience your big idea through one image.
ReplyDeleteThe only critique I have is that your postcards require some information in order to be fully understood. Just looking at them would not present your idea clearly. Once they have an explanation, however, they are amazing!
I am so excited that you like to quilt!!
Hello Mark! Your images seem to be about change in your life, and the different things you have to juggle in your personal, work, and school life. In the first image, I don’t think I would have understood any of it had you not explained it. So while it is interesting, it seems that it is hard for the viewer to relate. The second image is so good. So good! The text is beautiful, the colors are very rich, and the composition is so captivating. I really like this one…if you couldn’t tell. The third image is really interesting to me as well because it provides me a little insight into your personal life, and it really illustrates that act of juggling all these different things. I feel like overall these three are very personal, and I like to see that insight into your daily life. With the exception of the first one, you have also done a great job of making these relatable to the viewer.
ReplyDeleteAll of your images are very revealing and say a lot about you. The change involved in your life obviously makes a huge impacts. Each postcard explains a different part of your life, each step or chapter has a different spot in your life. The first postcard is the collision of all the different impacts you have and all the different roles you have to take on.
ReplyDeleteThe third one is the one that seems to connect the most because it shows your life and it shows change. I really like that you used a different type of repetition by continuously repeating the image on top of itself to have a whole new idea. It almost looks like a kentridge and you are trying to capture certain moments in time, but trying to allow yourself to stabilize at the same time. Being able to organize everything and control your life is so hard especially with all that you do. This makes no sense anymore and I am sorry. happy friday mark! =)
It seems like your big idea is change and how we have to change through life and from day to day. Your third one is great and awful at the same time. That image made me feel so uncomfortable. It was like a claustrophobic experience with out actually being in a closed area. For your second one I think your areal perspective is really nice to the visual aspect of your postcard. Your First postcard was a little confusing but it was interesting how you could use different household items to represent different aspects and people in your life.
